Reflection
It's been an incredible year and we all are incredibly proud of the dedication each of our members have shown. Without a doubt, our project has changed in so many different ways throughout the years which was dependant on so many different factors, however, we made it! Without a doubt, there were some very unexpected moments we encountered that we very successfully overcame. Email after email, rejection after rejection, it was surprising how difficult it was to find speakers for various events. However, through persistence, we were able to get AMAZING speakers for all of our workshops. This project of course felt work heavy in addition with all of our coursework, but the absolute satisfaction after the completion of a meeting, a workshop, an event, makes it completely worth it. Each of us have grown in terms of public speaking, organization, and in confidence to pursue anything that we want. We really learned a lot about what it means to organize events that really stick in people's minds. Looking back, we could have of course made many improvements, utilizing our meeting times more efficiently, spacing out our events evenly, and advertising more to the student body would have been extremely beneficial to our project. Nevertheless, our team will continue to learn and improve just like we have for the past two years.
What our team has to say...
"This year our club was able to meet all targets for the GirlsBuild pillars: civic engagement; Health & Wellness; and STEM and College Access. I was able to see first-hand as secretary of Girls SOAR High! We reached out to many communities and left those who attended our workshops with knowledge of such issues. I, myself, even learned about how important voting is and how to not be scared after high school, going into college. Mental health is another issue I support fully and I learned a lot about how to have a better wellbeing and that breaks are necessary. Overall, I feel our team did all we could to fulfill and meet all pillars and I was so happy to be apart of it!" - Cassidy Kendall
"I'm so proud of us!! So much work and good intentions went into this project and I couldn't have done it myself, I'm glad to have such an amazing and capable group with me! This is a topic that needs so much attention especially in our communities, there's so much uneasiness about colleges and applying that we aren't told about until it's too late. Let's see what we can do next year" - Michelle Medina
"As Vice President of Girls SOAR High I have had the opportunity to have a leading role in hosting workshops and meetings. It has improved my networking skills alongside communicating with individuals within our school and general community. This year as Vice President has provided me with many opportunities of growth and I hope to continue this position into my senior year with more activities and forms of community outreach to present and host. " - Orisha Lamon
Expanding our project
Scholarships, majors, and extracurriculars are things students have so many questions about and our project has really made us realize the attention this topic needs in order to help more students. As a result and continuation of this project, a club is being created by member Michelle Medina in order to properly address this topic within our school known as "college prep club". This club will host college field trips, scholarship information, and creating guidance for the underclassmen of our school to succeed in the future.
