Creating a school-wide resource
Before getting to the actual project we needed to figure out the logistics. Would students be comfortable with others knowing what hygiene products they needed? What specifically would students need or be interested in? In what way can our team provide hygiene products in a supportive and comfortable way? To figure out the answers to our questions we sent out school-wide surveys inquiring about what specific hygiene products were needed and in what way they should be delivered. It is important to note that this is a unique resource to our school as before this students did not have access to quality hygiene products. Next, GSH officers divided up who would do what; some members or officers would make online posts promoting the wellness corner, others would make posters, and others would buy and decorate the wellness corner. Students could also fill out an anonymous paper form, that could be found inside the wellness corner cabinet, and specify what items they needed so that an officer could create a personalized bag available the following day.
Project need
The GSH officers and members thought hard about what was needed in SOAR's population and how to make it accessible. Often, women's struggles or topics are silenced and dismissed. This creates a hateful environment. We are aware of just how damaging this can be to women and non-male individuals. Following through with our goal has not only emphasized unity and acceptance in our school community but is also eating away slowly at the problem that is stigmatization and labeling women's subjects as “not to be discussed out loud”. We have developed a wellness corner, available to everyone at our school, to help eliminate the shame that hygiene products have. Protecting and developing places where we can display our support for women and nonmale individuals alike, makes others follow suit, and it gives us momentum and potential for much more.
Volunteer hours
Volunteer hours were provided to anyone who donated any items. An example of that would be, fifteen minutes per every travel-sized item or thirty minutes per every full-sized item, with a limit of three hours per semester. We included products for everyone in every situation such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, face wipes, deodorant, sunscreen, and pads. Volunteer hours would be verified by submitting a google form which would be sent to our advisor so she could approve the appropriate hours. Providing an opportunity for students to get volunteer hours allows the wellness corner to stay self reliant running off our purchased materials and students donated materials.
